Nightly News: SBS 2023 Day Two

The 21st Annual South Beach Symposium (SBS) is going strong and Day Two’s sessions were phenomenal.

After an invigorating sunrise yoga session, Brett A. King, MD, PhD, Brittany G. Craiglow, MD, and Natasha A. Mesinkovska, MD, PhD, kicked off day two with the Gamechangers in Alopecia Areata (AA) Satellite Symposium. The trio reviewed the current data and attendees were asked about their experiences in daily practice. The experts provided their own pearls for treatment during patient case presentations during which Dr. Craiglow also shared her love of combination therapies in the treatment of AA.

The Energy Based Devices Session, led by SBS co-chair, Michael H. Gold, MD, covered what’s new, what’s emerging, and what’s coming. Following the insightful sessions of Dr. Gold, his fellow co-chair, David J. Goldberg, MD, JD, and Suneel Chilukuri, MD, concluded with an in-depth look at hyperpigmentation. He reviewed traditional treatment options and their limitations, the importance of sunscreen for melasma patients, and much more.

The much-anticipated Sexual and Gender Diverse Dermatology (SGD) Summit, chaired by expert dermatologist, Klint Peebles, MD, reviewed various terminology, taking a closer look at gender dysphoria and the mental health comorbidities in transgender communities. He also touched on the importance of cultural competency and humility and how to best approach SGD patients in a healthcare setting.

The morning’s Aesthetic Patient Device Demonstrations were a hit as usual. Dermatologist Jill S. Waibel, MD, began the session with a demonstration of Cytrellis’ Ellacor® device. Among other devices covered were Cutera’s AviClear®, the SkinPen® by Crown Aesthetics, as well as a didactic presentation of GladSkin’s eczema cream. It was an exciting experience for all involved!

The afternoon LIVE Patient Injections Session did not disappoint. Expert injectors Shasa Hu, MD, and Roberta S. Del Campo, MD allowed attendees to get up close as they spoke about positioning and best practices when using injections for body rejuvenation. Attendees were able to ask questions and gain clarification, allowing them to walk away with a more profound appreciation of the procedures.

Christopher G. Bunick, MD, PhD, led the Applications of Genomics Session alongside other experts. A discussion on precision medicine ensued in which Dr. Bunick and his colleagues demonstrated the benefits of this on patient care. Among the many topics discussed during this session was Dr. Waibel’s review of several trials that look at how genomics may shape the future of cosmetic dermatology.

The Masters of Pediatric Dermatology (MOPD) Symposium came to a close today and we want to say a special thank you to all who helped make this event the success it was. After an invigorating morning lineup, MOPD’s afternoon session kicked off with the Infants and Atopic Dermatitis (AD) Satellite Symposium. Here, MOPD chair, Lawrence A. Schachner, MD, led with an outline of some of the challenges of AD and offered tips for diagnosis. Dr. Schachner was joined by pediatric dermatology experts Elaine C. Siegfried, MD and Mercedes E. Gonzalez, MD, who reviewed the available toolkit and some pertinent case studies.

SBS hosted a Valentine’s Day Pre-Par for attendees, the perfect opportunity for some refreshments, networking, and relaxation as they prepare for more exciting sessions tomorrow!
