A Recap of the 2023 South Beach Symposium

The 2023 South Beach Symposium (SBS) ended on Sunday, Feb. 12, after four incredible days of learning, networking, discovery, and Miami sunshine. Thank you to all our attendees, faculty, sponsors, partners, and staff who contributed to the success of SBS.

Day ONE

As participants filed in for DAY ONE of SBS, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel was abuzz with excited chatter. Co-chairs, Michael H. Gold, MD, and David J. Goldberg, MD, JD, kicked things off with an introductory session before diving right into learning with the Cutaneous Oncology Symposium. Later, expert aesthetic plastic surgeon, Z. Paul Lorenc, MD, spoke about the latest hot topics in aesthetics alongside Dr. Gold, Ronda S. Farah, MD, and Glynis R. Ablon, MD.

A brilliant merger of medical and aesthetic dermatology, day one did not disappoint. Sweet treats and coffee breaks served as welcome networking opportunities between sessions, a chance for attendees and faculty to take in their surroundings and connect with friends and colleagues. The Ultimate Miami Party capped off the first day, with guests enjoying refreshments and some live salsa-dancing entertainment.

Day TWO

DAY TWO saw an incredible session lineup and came to a close with a special Valentine’s Day Celebration. Brett A. King, MD, PhD, Brittany G. Craiglow, MD, and Natasha A. Mesinkovska, MD, PhD, presented the Gamechangers in Alopecia Areata (AA) CME Satellite Symposium, an interesting one-hour session that took participants through the latest data and treatment options for AA, including the groundbreaking Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors.

Day two also featured the LIVE Patient Injections for Body Rejuvenation, always a popular session at SBS. Expert injectors, Roberta S. Del Campo, MD, and Shasa Hu, MD, wowed with their demonstrations, taking participants through their techniques and sharing their expert tips and advice along the way. SBS Planning Committee Member, Christopher G. Bunick, MD, PhD, led a brand-new topic focusing on genomics and precision medicine.

The Sexual and Gender Diverse Dermatology Summit also took place on Friday, Feb. 10. This two-hour session was led by Klint Peebles, MD, alongside Matthew D. Mansh, MD, Dr. Farah, and Frances W. Grimstad, MD, MS, who joined via video link.

Day THREE

DAY THREE beautifully demonstrated that SBS is more than just an aesthetic conference. The day began with the Therapeutic Hotline Session by renowned dermatologist, Leon H. Kircik, MD. Together with Dr. King, Hilary E. Baldwin, MD, and Andrew F. Alexis, MD, MPH, they covered the existing and up-and-coming treatments for conditions such as acne, rosacea, and psoriasis. Dr. Bunick later led the discussion on boxed warnings, debunking the myths, and how best to address patient concerns. He was joined by Dr. Kircik, Dr. Alexis, and William E. Damsky, MD, PhD.

Day three also featured TWO incredible specialty sessions, the Hair Loss and Restoration Track and the Anti-Aging and Integrative Medicine Track. During the Anti-Aging Track led by Dr. Ablon, special guest, Andrew Heyman, MD, MHSA, took participants through an intriguing discussion on environmental factors’ contributions to skin conditions, examining several relevant studies. The sold-out Hands-On Cadaver Workshop in which Dr. Lorenc allowed attendees to gain first-hand experience in dissection and injection techniques. Before heading off to enjoy an evening in Miami Beach, we announced the results of our passport to prizes, with the lucky grand prize winner receiving a brand-new Peloton bike!

Day FOUR

The fourth and FINAL DAY of SBS featured an exciting LIVE Patient Injections Session, this time for facial rejuvenation. Doris J. Day, MD, took to the stage alongside Dr. Hu, Susan H. Weinkle, MD, and Dr. Lorenc for some riveting demonstrations and expert tips. The experts also updated on the latest aesthetic trends.

Peter A. Lio, MD, led the final specialty session, the Atopic Dermatitis Workshop, alongside Karan Lal, DO, MS, Dr. Alexis, Dr. Kircik, Dr. King, and Dr. Bunick. It was a highly pertinent session that covered several topics designed to educate participants on therapies, possible complications, and how to best treat patients.
