Global Dermatological Group Issues Warning on Topical Corticosteroid Misuse in Skin Bleaching Products

The International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) recently published an updated position statement addressing the concerning rise in the misuse of topical corticosteroids as skin-bleaching products.

Describing the issue as a “growing global public health crisis that demands urgent action,” the ILDS is urging immediate efforts to curb the unregulated use of these potent medications in cosmetic skin-lightening products.

Professor Henry W. Lim, President of the ILDS, emphasized the organization’s commitment to global skin health, stating:

“As the leading global advocate for skin health, the ILDS is dedicated to advancing education, clinical care, and research to address the pressing dermatological challenges we face. Our updated position statement underscores the growing concerns raised by our member societies about the misuse of corticosteroids in skin-bleaching products. It also outlines key recommendations to combat this serious public health crisis.”

The ILDS highlights that potent topical corticosteroids are being increasingly used as skin-lightening agents, particularly in regions such as Africa and South Asia. This trend is largely driven by deep-rooted sociocultural norms that favor lighter skin tones.

As a result, the global skin bleaching industry is experiencing significant growth, with projections indicating it could reach $15.5 billion by 2032. Oftentimes, these products are sold outside of medical regulatory frameworks and contain potent or super-potent corticosteroids, which can lead to serious health consequences.

The health consequences of long-term corticosteroid misuse can be severe and wide-ranging, including acne, significant skin thinning, visible blood vessel dilation, and extensive stretch marks. The ILDS also warns of more serious outcomes, such as persistent fungal infections, irreversible skin damage, systemic side effects, and psychological distress.

In addition to strengthening regulations, the ILDS is calling for clearer guidelines to protect the public, enhanced education about the dangers of skin bleaching practices, and advocacy efforts to promote safer dermatological care worldwide.
