He also performs unique dermatologic research studying the three-dimensional structures of skin-related proteins using x-ray crystallography. He sees patients at Yale Dermatology Associates in Middlebury, CT and provides care of patients with all dermatologic conditions. Dr. Bunick has been a dermatologist and a physician-scientist with over 25 years involvement in structural biology research. His x-ray crystallography experience began in junior high school, when he conducted experiments for the science fair on simulating the microgravity environment of space for better protein crystal growth. This early foray into structural biology led to more extensive biochemistry training during undergraduate, graduate, and medical school at Vanderbilt University. As an undergraduate, he trained with Dr. Gerald Stubbs in crystallography and fiber diffraction of filamentous plant viruses. This research sparked an interest in long, filamentous systems, which is reflected in his current work on intermediate filaments, particularly keratin function in the skin barrier. He subsequently trained with Dr. Walter Chazin for his PhD, investigating calcium binding proteins, protein engineering, and DNA repair mechanisms. After completing medical school and the MSTP at Vanderbilt and dermatology residency at Yale, he performed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Yale University with Nobel Laureate Thomas Steitz. He received the 2017 Young Investigator Award from the American Academy of Dermatology.
