Lawrence A. Schachner, MD


After completing medical school at the University of Nebraska, and pediatric and dermatology residencies at Montefiore Hospital in New York City, Dr. Schachner joined the faculty of the University of Miami (UM) Miller School of Medicine in 1978. During his long career at UM, he served as Harvey Blank Professor of pediatrics and Chair of the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, was a five-time recipient of the Best Teacher Award, and organized the annual pediatric dermatology conferences hosted by the university. Dr. Schachner remains co-director and attending physician of the Division of Pediatric Dermatology at UM Miller School of Medicine, where he mentors medical students on both pediatric and dermatology rotations.

As a practicing pediatric dermatologist and leader in the field, Dr. Schachner is past president of the American Society for Pediatric Dermatology, past vice president of the International Society of Pediatric Dermatology, and past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Pediatric Dermatology. As a result of his years of clinical and teaching expertise, he has authored hundreds of publications, most notably writing four editions of “Pediatric Dermatology,” a text widely used by clinicians to assist in diagnosing and treating pediatric skin conditions.
