Marjana Tomic-Canic, Ph.D., is Professor and William H. Eaglstein M.D. Chair in Wound Healing. In addition, she is Vice Chair of Research and the Director of the Wound Healing and Regenerative Medicine Research Program in the Dr. Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She also serves as a professor for the Molecular and Cell Pharmacology, Microbiology and Immunology, and Human Genomics and Genetics Graduate Programs. In addition to her full time faculty appointment at UM, Tomic-Canic also holds adjunct faculty appointment at the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine. Tomic-Canic received her doctoral and postdoctoral training at NYU School of Medicine before joining the faculty in 1994. In 2005, as a faculty member of the Cornell University Weill Medical College, she directed the Tissue Repair Program at the Hospital for Special Surgery’s Department of Tissue Engineering, Regeneration, and Repair. Tomic-Canic joined the Miller School of Medicine in 2008.
For more than 30 years, Tomic-Canic’s primary research interest has been in skin biology and regenerative medicine. Her current research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of wound healing and its pathophysiology, human and diabetic models of wound healing, wound genome, mechanisms of cell-based therapies, local sustained gene delivery, predictive and diagnostic biomarkers for chronic wounds, innate and adaptive immunity in wound infection and role of aging in wound healing. Discoveries of her laboratory established the field of human wound genome that identified the first genomic and epigenetic contributors to pathophysiology of chronic, non-healing wounds in patients.
A recognized national and international leader in wound healing research, Dr Tomic-Canic has continuously been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for nearly 20 years. She was recognized for her research accomplishments with WALS Lectureship by the NIH. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to her field, she recently received the William H. Eaglstein, M.D. Endowed Chair in Wound Healing.
Tomic-Canic is a member of the Society of Investigative Dermatology, the Association of Advanced Wound Care, the Wound Healing Society, serving as its President 2016-2017 and Executive Board 2014-2018. She Chaired Program Committee of the Wound Healing Society organizing the meeting in 2011 and is currently member of the SID Program and Scientific Committee. She had multiple editorial responsibilities, including serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Investigative Dermatology (currently serving as a Section Editor), Experimental Dermatology and Wound Repair and Regeneration. Tomic-Canic also served at the Advisory Council of the NIH and was appointed to The Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) NIH Multi-Council Working Group. She is currently a standing member of the NIH ACTS study section and serves as the member of the University of Miami Research Council.
