The male aesthetics market is a growing industry. While it was once customary for dermatologists to see mostly female patients, physicians are now encountering an increasing number of male patients seeking cosmetic improvement. This is due in large part to a growing acceptance of non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures and men gaining a greater awareness of anti-aging and skin health.
“One of the reasons for the rise in number of non-surgical procedures is the rise in popularity and acceptance for minimally invasive and non-invasive procedures for facial resurfacing and body contouring procedures, hair removal and hair regrowth especially among men,” says Amber Chourasia, a lead analyst for Technavio for health and wellness research.
According to a survey conducted in 2014 by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the non-surgical cosmetic procedures with the highest percentage of male patients was intense pulsed light at 13.9%, laser hair removal at 12.9%, and neurotoxin injection at 11.5%.
It’s important to understand that men represent a patient pool that is uniquely different than the female population as they have different behaviors and cosmetic goals. Men are more likely to deprioritize their health concerns and this behavior carries over to dermatologic care as well. Getting a male patient into your office is difficult to begin with, but overcoming the obstacle of shorter and limited dialogue with the male patient creates an even bigger barrier. Make it a priority to customize your communication strategy and be aware of these hurdles so you can maximize the time with your patient.
Make sure your practice doesn’t get left in the dust! Get with the current trend and seek out more male patients to add to your patient pool. It can be as easy as starting with your current patient list and encouraging them to bring their husband, brother, father or son along.
